The tea plant, Camillia sinensis, produces dark green, shiny leathery leaves and delicate, small white blossoms, These plants grow best in hot and humid conditions. The most suitable climates offer temperatures ranging from 50°-85°F, 80-90 inches of rainfall a year and elevations from 1,000 to 7,000 feet above sea level. A combination of altitude and humidity promotes the desired slow growth, and the higher the tea is grown, the more flavour it has and the finer the quality. Many of the world's most famous teas come from bushes cultivated above 4,000 feet.

As with the production of wine, the final taste and quality of the teas are influenced by many important factors: climate, soil, altitude, conditions, when and how it is plucked and processed, the blending, packaging, transportation and the storage of tea. These important factors are closely monitored and ensures that Sinclair Cottage provides the finest teas and that socially and environmentally acceptable methods have been used in the production of these teas.

From this one species of plant, different types of tea are produced. It is the different processing methods that produce the various types of tea (white, green, oolong, black, scented and compressed) and the different varieties within each of these total more than 3,000 teas from around the world. Begin or continue the enjoyment of the many varieties of tea by ordering the high quality of teas from Sinclair Cottage Teas.

Sinclair Cottage tea is purchased from a supplier who has received a "Four Star" rating from The Tea Council of Canada. As well as providing the best quality tea, it is constantly in contact with regulatory agencies around the world with respect to tea.

  • It insists that its tea estates or tea gardens follow above average labour practices and have policies in place for the welfare of its employees and conduct themselves in an ethical and socially responsible manner.
  • It audits the estates to ensure conformance to the laws of the producing country as well as it's own requirements.
  • All tea continues to be rigorously tested above the requirements of Health Canada and the USFDA.
  • All growers must display a history of above average agricultural husbandry practices to minimize the impact on the environment and wildlife. Some issues considered are shade trees, replanting and infilling, use of Guatemala grass to reduce erosion and reinvigorate the soil.

  • The supplier reuses all packaging material sent to them.
  • They receive no tea shipped in wooden chests, as they are a one time use container and contribute to deforestation in tea producing countries
